GWGA Newsletter

Reminder for the GWGA 4th of July social event this coming Monday, 2 p.m. at the home of Carey Durham, our GWGA Vice President. This is a fun event, come and get to know your golf sisters better! If you have not signed up but would like to come, please contact Carey so she knows how many people to expect. Food is being prepared so it’s important to know how many to expect. Bring your own beverage and your bathing suit if you wish to cool down in the pool.

Captain’s Choice Shotgun was rained out and Rescheduled for July 21, 7:20 a.m., same time as previously scheduled. Plan to stay for lunch and prizes, as previously advertised, lunch paid for by GWGA. Because the league canceled the shotgun last week, those who had signed up to play last week will receive a participation credit toward championship eligibility.

Those who went to Rock Harbor Golf Club for the overnight had a blast. Many are hoping to go back there to play the courses again. They are fun, unusual courses that provide a buffer between a quarry and the nearby community. Located on the edge of the quarry, the courses have dramatic elevation changes and hundreds of huge limestone boulders (from the quarry) providing scenic pathways and challenging holes. With rules relaxed, many were taking mulligans to meet the challenges! Photos have been posted on our website click here for quick slideshow.

Be ready for the Penn National sign up, which will be emailed to you in August. Roommates are required at this venue so find a roommate before the sign up comes out. Dates, cost and other details can be found here.

What’s in Leaderboard besides the Tee Time sign up? If using your phone, scroll down to the very bottom. Click on “Results” to see tournament results of all tournaments played. Click on “Reports” to see your Ringer score (your best score this season on each hole…..which hole do you need to work on??). You can also see your birdies and chip-ins. Click on “My Game” to see all your Greendale scores for this season.

If the GWGA newsletter you received by email gets lost in your thousands of emails and there was something in it you wanted to access, you can easily find all newsletters on the front page of our website. In your favorite search engine (like Google) just type in something like “greendale women’s golf, Alexandria” and you’ll find our site!! Try it! Open the site and the newsletter is on the main page.

Tee Times Time change:  Reminder to all that our starting tee time will be moved up to 7:20 for June, July and August.  (Will return to 7:50 in September).

COMING SOON…SHOTGUN CHAOS….WHERE’S MY CART….WHICH HOLE AM I STARTING ON….WHO IS IN MY FOURSOME…WHERE ARE MY CLUBS….READ ON….

June 23 – Shotgun Start with lunch and prizes afterwards.  Our Captains choice event (for members only) incudes lunch afterwards in the clubhouse. Please plan to join in the fun and stay for about an hour after golf.  ALL Golfers need to arrive by 6:50 latest, yes, earlier than usual!  We will all arrive at the same time to pay our fees. Expect lines and you will also need to look for your name on an assigned cart with your playing partners and review the rules.  At 7:10 we will gather for a group photo and the rules of play will be explained before we proceed to our designated holes.  Lunch is paid for by the league. If you cannot stay for lunch, please notify the Tournament Chairs this week as they will be ordering and paying for your food.  Prizes will be awarded for the winning team and for contest winners of long drive, closest to the pin and most accurate drive.

June 20-21 – Rock Harbor overnight trip.  We currently have one open slot for this trip.  More information can be found here.   Please contact Sally Reams if you are interested in going.

Weekly scorekeeping/entering:  Reminder that every member must share one or two duties related to scorekeeping each week. It’s a duty of all golfers to stay following the round until the scores are calculated, the card is signed by all and the scores are entered into leaderboard.  If you cannot add numbers in your head, use a calculator, or volunteer for one of the other related duties.  If you don’t have a phone with you to enter scores, you may borrow one or use the laptop in the clubhouse.  No one is exempt from these duties. The duties can be split up within a foursome, 2 score card keepers during the round, 2 who calculate the scores and reconcile the 2 cards, and 2 to enter the scores in leaderboard.

GWGA April Newsletter

Welcome NEW members! GWGA has 8 new members!   Everyone take a look at the new member. photos and bios.

Thank you to MENTORS. Each new member was assigned a mentor by our membership chair, Jeanie Tulipane.  All new members have played mentoring rounds to help integrate them into our league.  2022 Mentors were/are Gary Callis, Carey Durham, Judy Flader, Margaret Melady, Sally Reams, Eileen Ruzicka, Sue Spatcher, Jeanie Tulipane, and Kyong Yi.

Know where to find Tournament Results?  If not, open Leaderboard.systems.  Scroll down, or over (depending on what device you use) until you see a text menu.  Select “Results”, then click the Go button for the day you wish to see.  The winner $ shown are really points (2 or 3).  Points are accumulated over the season and paid at the end of the year.  See the Award Points chart for how many points are given for each prize category. Also you can see all your rounds posted by clicking on “My Game”.

Reminders from the Tournament Chairs (Margaret and Sue): Please read the GWGA Handbook and follow procedures. When the scorecards are illegible or incomplete, it takes the closers extra time to close the day. Scorekeepers: (all must take a turn). Official or Back-up must be written at the top; turn in both cards. Date the cards. Finish time needs to be recorded in the designated blank. Legible signatures please – all players must sign the official card; one signs the back-up card.

Message from GWGA President, Kathi Pierce: This season we are focusing on our Pace of Play in order to ensure we do NOT have any 5-6 hour rounds. One important aspect is for every group to use the Pace of Play time chart card provided in the clubhouse. Whoever picks up the scorecards should also take the pace chart that is specifically for your tee time. This card will let you know if your group is currently on pace during the round. Keep it with the scorecard and return it afterwards; don’t leave it in a cart.  Play Ready Golf. This means…. Even if your ball is lying closer to the pin you should make your shot if other players are not Ready. Each week you will receive an email showing round times so you can compare your group to the rest of the league. If you need help with your pace you should contact Sue Spatcher for some great pointers. The good news is after 4 weeks of golf we are averaging 4:20 rounds. Kudos to Carey & Wanda on a 3:07 round & Kim, Ingrid & Jeanie on a 3:30 round!!!

Please use the GWGA double par rule. Pick up after reaching double par (6 strokes on par 3, 8 strokes on par 4, and 10 strokes on par 5, if not on the green). Place the ball on the green one putter head inside the green. Limit of 3 putts then pick up the ball and record 4 putts on the scorecard for the hole.

On Thursday mornings, if you are not coming, call the clubhouse and cancel, 703/971-3788.

What is the difference between our 2 separate websites?  Leaderboard is only used to sign up for tee times, enter scores and calculate tournament results for each week.  The GWGA website contains everything else: the GWGA Handbook, Membership directories, meeting minutes, photos, overnight trip information, rules and more.  For either site, just open your browser and type “leaderboard.systems” or something like “Greendale women’s golf” and you can find us, you do not need to remember the specific wording of the website link.

Overnight Shenanigans….uh…. Trips! (just FUN golf):

Rock Harbor trip June 20-21 has 3 waiting list slots.  If you wish to be on the waiting list, please add your name to the Sign Up.   We can try to add another foursome, or there may be people who find they cannot go. People on the waiting list people will get first priority.

Rock Harbor Golf Course, Winchester, VA
