October News

Fall is here and we are fast approaching the end of our season.  A few important items:

October 27, Captain’s Choice and shotgun start. This will be an invitational, you may invite a guest.  We will have light refreshments (no lunch) and there will be some contests and prizes.  The sign up for this will be sent out early on October 16th, same date/time you will receive the Oct 20 sign up.  Details provided in the sign up.

End of Season Awards Luncheon will be Thursday, November 3 at Mount Vernon Country Club. Lucinda Audey is organizing the luncheon and will be collecting $26.50 for the luncheon.  Watch for more information from Lucinda, coming soon.

Dues for 2017 Season – We are asking for your 2017 dues no later than the Nov 3 luncheon, so if you are coming to the luncheon, please bring your checks payable to GWGA.  If you are not attending the luncheon, please mail your dues to Mary Palm’s home address so she receives your check no later than Nov 3.  It is helpful to board members preparing for next season to know how many and who will be returning; it is also helpful to Greendale so they can ensure the GHIN memberships do not expire.  Dues for 2017 are same as 2016:

Annual League membership fee: $50
Annual Greendale GHIN Handicap fee $30
Optional Chip-in fund $6

Total including chip-in fund $86; without chip-in fund $80.

See you at the golf course!

Eligibility for Championship Contests and Tournament

The flight distribution report has been updated to include your rounds completed and September 1 Handicaps.  Those who have 10 rounds may participate in the upcoming championship contests and tournament. All members golfing in September (both non-championship players and championship players) need to check the report so you know your eligibility.  Watch for an email from our Tournament Chair for further information about contest day on Sep 8 and the three golf tournament dates Sep 15, 22 and 29.

3 Sign Ups Sunday and September Info

  • Look for 3 Sign-Ups, this Sunday Aug 14 at 7 p.m.   You will receive sign ups for Aug 18, Sep 1 and Sep 2.  Sep 1 and 2 are not league days and will not count toward championship eligibility.  Thursday, Sep 1 we cannot play at Greendale (Greendale hosting Arlington Seniors that morning).  So we are having the Forest Greens outing.  More info on sign up.  Friday Sep 2 at Greendale we can play at the weekday rate. We must run these 2 sign ups very early because we have to let them know 2 weeks in advance how many tee times to block for us.
  • Golfers not eligible for the September Championship may play golf each week, but they will follow the tournament players in the later time slots.  For them it is simply a fun day, no games/contests.  If you are a non-championship player, please keep reading, more info below pertaining to you and how you sign up, etc.
  • Championship eligibility – You must have 10 rounds before the championship begins.  We have 2 more league dates (8/18 and 8/25) before Championship.  To check your number of rounds look at the Flight Distribution report online, dated 8/3.  If you played with the league on 8/4 or 8/11, add that to the rounds shown on the 8/3 report to get your current total.
  • Sep 8 – Contest week – This will be a regular sign up, all play but only those eligible for Championship will participate in the contests; Game will be low gross, but only the contest results (not scores) will count toward championship.  Regular signup, foursomes mixed with championship and non-championship players.
  • Sep 15, 22, 29 – You will sign up for either championship play or non-championship play.  The tournament chair will arrange the foursomes.  First week everyone plays in their flight to the extent possible; second two weeks foursomes will be arranged using tournament scoring as primary criteria (you may or may not be with your flight, you will be with people who scored similarly in prior rounds).  Non-championship players will follow the tournament, playing in the later tee times.

Feeling the Heat?

Hydration  – In excessive heat, remember to start hydrating the night before golf and drink more than usual before you arrive at the course.  Start your round with a hydrated body and drink between golf shots to maintain hydration.  Don’t wait until you get out on the course to begin hydrating.

Hole 17 – Reminder, the washed out area on the left hill about 150 yards from the tee box is Ground Under Repair.  If your ball lands in that area, take a drop in the rough (not the fairway) at the bottom of the hill adjacent to where the players think the ball ended up. The GUR extends all the way to the top edge of the woods.

New members recently -In the past thirty days we have added 5 new members, bringing our total membership to 61.  Please welcome: Kathy Chandler, Tania Richards, Jackie Fleming, Dinny Jenson and Linda Burton.  New members, please familiarize yourself with the member only section of our website.

Please repair divots!  Every week GWGA is leaving fresh divots on the greens.  PLEASE carry a tee or a divot tool in your pocket and repair a divot or two, even if your ball made no divot.  If you hit the green from the fairway, likely you made a divot.  Look for it.  If you don’t know how to repair it, ask someone in your foursome.  Also, those of you riding, please use the sand mixture on your carts to fix any divots in the fairways, even if you did not make a divot.  Let’s try to keep our course in better shape.

Cancellations/changed line-ups – Recently we have experienced an unusual number of last minute cancellations due to hot temperatures.  If you are canceling due to temperatures, please do so the night before versus the morning of play.  The tournament chair needs time to adjust the line-ups.

When you arrive at the clubhouse, please check the tee sheet to see if you have been moved.  Only one person (tournament chair/member in charge) has authority to move people around.  Members must be flexible and respect those changes made by the tournament chair/member in charge.

Arrive early – First 3 foursomes arrive no later than 7; everyone else is suppose to be at the clubhouse by 7:30 a.m.  If you don’t arrive early, you may find that your foursome has already to moved to the tee box and you may miss your tee time.  When we have cancellations people are moved up, we cannot leave gaps.

See you on Thursday!
